technical & quality

Thornton Sugar has supplied the UK food industry since 1959, combining decades of ingredient expertise with modern technical, quality, and supply chain assurance standards.

We support our customers with:

  • + Technical product guidance
  • + Specification management
  • + Supply chain traceability
  • + Regulatory compliance support
  • + Audit and documentation assistance

We do not simply supply sugar, we provide ingredient expertise and technical partnership.

Are sulphites or additives such as E220 – E228 used in your sugar?

No. The sugar supplied by Thornton Sugar Ltd is not manufactured using added sulphites (E220), sulphur dioxide, preservatives, or artificial E-number additives during the refining process.

Some product specifications may declare:

Sulphites: <10 ppm, typically resulting 4-6ppm

This does not mean sulphites have been intentionally added.

This declaration exists because trace sulphur compounds may naturally occur during:

Agricultural cultivation

Extraction and evaporation

Crystallisation processes

Laboratory analytical testing

Therefore:

No sulphites are intentionally added

No E220 or any other E is dosed into production

No preservative additives are used

This declaration reflects naturally occurring trace background levels or analytical detection capability.

Does sugar contain allergens?

Pure sugar is not classified as an allergen under UK food legislation.

However, Thornton maintains transparent technical declarations where analytical traces may require disclosure in accordance with customer or legislative requirements.

Is your sugar vegan, vegetarian, Halal or Kosher suitable?

Most products supplied by Thornton Sugar are naturally suitable for:

Vegan

Vegetarian

Halal

Kosher

Product-specific certifications and declarations are available upon request.

Why can sugar vary slightly in colour?

Sugar is a natural agricultural product, and minor variation may occur due to:

Seasonal crop differences

Natural mineral content

Crystal size variation

Processing conditions

These natural variations do not affect product safety, quality, or functionality.

Why can sugar harden or clump?

Sugar is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment. To maintain product quality:

Store in dry conditions

Avoid temperature fluctuation

Keep packaging sealed

Follow FIFO stock rotation

Clumping does not indicate spoilage or food safety risk.
